The Women’s Premier Basketball Association team started the elimination games at the club championship of the Americas on Friday, facing Defensor Sporting of Uruguay in the quarterfinals. With this being the first day of games across groups, it was not clear how both sides would match up in this meeting. The Bay Area Phoenix ended up having an excellent game and rolling to the semifinals with the 104-61 win.
The starting lineup was adjusted again with the group of Connie Clarke, Alaiyah San Juan, Aniya McDonald-Perry, Rosemarie Julien, and DeAngelique Waithe getting the call. Julien made the first basket of the game before Defensor Sporting made a three-pointer, but that would be the last lead that the opposition would hold. Julien made two free throws on the next possession and the lead kept growing, never really being threatened and reaching its highest point late in the game. Clarke continued to be a playmaker on both ends of the court and Julien paced the scoring.
Earlier in the day, Araraquara defeated Ferro Carril Oeste, so both Group B teams advanced to the medal round. The Phoenix will face the team that won Group A, Colegio Los Leones De Quilpue from Chile. The irony of the matchup will be that the only player who appeared for the Phoenix in WPBA play is on the opposition as Alisha Wilson is one of several players that they brought in for this tournament. Colegio Los Leones De Quilpue defeated Defensor Sporting 71-57 in group play after trailing at halftime. The game will be on YouTube again, but the link might not be created until quite close to game time. The broadcast of this game is linked here.
