Miela Sowah
Australia finished the group stage on Monday with a game against Belgium as both teams had already advanced, but were looking to win and grab the automatic quarterfinal spot given to the first-place team in each group. Belgium ended up getting the 80-68 win as Miela Sowah entered right at the end of the game. It ended up being quite the gathering for Valkyries players from last year too as Julie Vanloo had 12 points in 29 minutes and Kyara Linskens had 12 points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes for Belgium. Stephanie Talbot had 8 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes and Chloe Bibby had 5 points in 11 minutes for Australia. They start the knockout round on Wednesday against Italy.
Gabby Williams and Janelle Salaun
France already secured first place in their group, but looked to get everyone involved before two days without a game ahead of the quarterfinals, getting a 111-56 win over Nigeria. Gabby Williams led all scorers with 25 points and added a team-high 6 rebounds in 18 minutes, followed by Janelle Salaun scoring 19 points in 20 minutes. Migna Toure had 16 points in 18 minutes and Carla Leite played 20 minutes as well.
Kokoro Tanaka
Japan knew that a win would mean that they advanced while a loss would require the tiebreaker to go in their favor after the result of the other game in the group. They lost 79-59 to Spain, but their win over Mali to start the tournament meant that they still advanced in third place. Kokoro Tanaka led them with 15 points in 23 minutes and Maria Conde had 9 points in 24 minutes for Spain. Their knockout round starts with a game against Hungary on Tuesday.
Rokia Doumbia
Mali knew that a win would mean that they advanced while a loss would require the tiebreaker to go in their favor after the result of the other game in the group. They fell behind Germany pretty quickly on their way to an 83-58 loss and Japan’s loss in the other game meant that the tiebreaker would be between them. That earlier loss meant that they were eliminated as Rokia Doumbia did lead them with 10 points in 31 minutes.
Cecilia Zandalasini
Italy closed Monday’s action with a game against China as both teams had advanced already, but were playing for a location in the bracket for Wednesday’s knockout round games. They quickly fell behind and ended up losing 71-51 as Cecilia Zandalasini had 12 points in 26 minutes, setting up a game against Australia next on Wednesday..
