The Golden State Valkyries Unveil Their Uniforms
The day before their first players are announced as part of the Expansion Draft, the Golden State Valkyries unveiled their first two uniforms on Thursday. The logos and colors had been announced a while ago, but there was still excitement in seeing how those would be used as design elements. Sales of the jersey have not started yet, but this was a good day for this reveal as the team will get the spotlight on Friday.
Color Scheme
The two versions of the uniform announced were the white Heroine Edition and the black Explorer Edition. The Heroine edition uses the black color of the logo for lettering while using the violet less prominently on items like the outlining of the numbers. The violet is much more prominent on the Explorer Edition with its use in the lettering. Both versions currently have the full logo along with the team name in the front, which distinguishes it from nearly all jerseys and that feature pushes the player’s front number off to one side, which is also unusual in the league.
While it may have been nice to have two more different designs for the two versions instead of mainly changing the color schemes, the front design that they chose should make them easily identifiable. There has been a lot of discussion about the unusual choice for the logo shape, but the scale on this jersey makes it fit in perfectly. The lightness of the violet shade means that the black did need to be used prominently in the Heroine Edition, but finding more ways to incorporate their more unique color in the jersey would make it more distinct.
Buying Jerseys
With the jerseys not being put on sale immediately, fans may be wondering what to expect when they are available. As is the case with NBA jerseys that can be bought, they will not be exact replicas of the uniforms used by the team in games. Besides the smaller advertising patch that is also on the upper part of NBA uniforms on the player’s left hand side, WNBA teams are also able get a sponsor for the entire bottom part of the front of the jersey. The jerseys that are made available will most likely not include those features, although the team gave away some jerseys as part of the reveal that had both ad patches. The league also has a deal with AT&T to place their name and logo on the back of all the jerseys for each team and those are usually included on the versions for sale. Those do blend into the Explorer Edition a little bit more with the lighter color fitting in with the use of white in that version. The Heroine Edition uses the company’s blue logo with black for the name, introducing another color to the mix and making it even more disappointing that the violet does not have a bigger role in this version.

Regarding the Jerseys, I have to say that they are a disappointment. With all of the Ad space, where will the players name go? Use the Violet color more and a little gold detailing. Jus’ sayin’.

It’s definitely disappointing to not see more of the violet, but there will presumably be a third uniform at some point that will hopefully have more of that color. It is no real surprise that they went with the maximum allowed number of ads, but obviously some company logos look worse than others on a jersey.
