The Golden State Valkyries start a five game homestand on Saturday when they host the Washington Mystics. After five days without a game, the Valkyries hope to be rested and in better health ahead of some critical games. This first matchup will be against a team on the brink of elimination from playoff contention so will be another tough test for Golden State as they try to secure their own playoff place.
The Valkyries
Health and player availability continues to be a big question for the team as they were just able to finish up the road trip with enough healthy players to get a win. Cecilia Zandalasini had already been ruled out earlier in the week and Monique Billings is also unavailable even though she has been able to participate more in practice. The question marks are over Carla Leite and Tiffany Hayes, who may need to miss at least another game. Golden State signed Bree Hall this week to prepare for being shorthanded again.
The Opposition
After losing to the Valkyries when the teams met back on the 13th, the Mystics won two games in a row to stay in the playoff picture. After that, they lost four consecutive games to put themselves in precarious position now. Their last game was on Thursday when they visited the New York Liberty and had the lead after the first quarter before losing by a big margin. Washington has made one move since facing Golden State last, signing rookie wing Madison Scott to three 7-day contracts after she was drafted by the Dallas Wings, but did not make their roster. Jacy Sheldon is expected to be the only player who will not be able to play for the Mystics besides Georgia Amoore, who was injured before the season started.
