The Golden State Valkyries announced that they signed Bree Hall to a 7-day contract on Wednesday. Hall returns to the team after the rookie made her debut in the league for them in June before being waived to meet the roster maximum rules with players returning from national team duty. Unfortunately, the reason that she is able to sign with the team right now when they have no open roster spots is the injuries that qualified them for an additional hardship exception.
Hall’s Valkyries Tenure
Bree Hall ended up spending twelve days with the team before the day that she was waived. There were five games during that time and she appeared in two of them, both blowout wins, getting her first even professional points. Even though she was waived, she actually ended up being paid for additional days as reported by Richard Cohen of Her Hoop Stats, which means that she suffered an injury during her time in San Francisco and had to be paid as if she was on the team until a doctor ruled that she was healthy enough to play again.
The Injury Situation
There was certainly hope after last weekend that the five days without a game would allow the team to rest and recover, getting back at least three players who were not available against the Dallas Wings. Cecilia Zandalasini has already been ruled out of Saturday’s game and it is clear that the Valkyries are extremely tight-lipped about injuries, so news about Tiffany Hayes and Carla Leite may come later.
Monique Billings continues to be out with her long-term injury, which allows Kaila Charles to remain on the roster. Even if the team only qualifies for the hardship exception for Hall for a game or two, it is well worth making sure that every available spot is filled ahead of the stretch run to qualify for the playoffs. With no other uses of the team’s remaining salary cap space in play, signing another person makes sense. Having a player who is already familiar with the system is a plus as not every player would be ready to contribute right away if called upon.
