The Golden State Valkyries have a quick two game road trip starting on Wednesday, opening with a game against the Washington Mystics. The teams met in the same place less than two weeks ago while battling for spots near the bottom of the playoffs and both clubs are still in the middle of that chase as they will also meet in San Francisco later this month. This game will be broadcast locally on television in the Sacramento area after no channels there carried the recent games.
The Valkyries
The finish to Monday’s game was not ideal for the Valkyries as Kate Martin had to exit early after working her way back into the rotation. She is listed on the injury report for this game so her availability will be determined closer to game time. Cecilia Zandalasini missed the last game against the Mystics while Kaila Charles had not been signed yet before that meeting. Golden State used a double-post lineup to start that game, but might prefer to just keep the same group this time.
The Opposition
Washington lost three more games in a row after losing to the Valkyries, but are coming off of a win over the Dallas Wings on Sunday. Part of this was due to a big trade that they made that signaled their intent to continue a rebuild. They traded starting wing Brittney Sykes to the Seattle Storm with the primary return being a first round draft pick. Veteran forward Alysha Clark did return for them in the deal while guard Zia Cooke was also brought in, but she was waived immediately.
In order to be able to make the trade, the team had to waive Sika Kone, who missed the game with Golden State to play for Mali’s national team, and they have not made a signing to return to a full roster. The Valkyries have already seen the other side of their other trade before the deadline, facing Aaliyah Edwards in the game against the Sun and now facing Jacy Sheldon. That move could leave the Mystics thinner in the frontcourt while having wing depth as Shakira Austin missed their last game and could still be out of action for this one.
