Covering the Golden State Valkyries and Bay Area Women's Professional Basketball

Julie Vanloo Joins Los Angeles Sparks

After the Golden State Valkyries waived Julie Vanloo on Tuesday, the other WNBA teams had two days to put in a claim for her contract. On Thursday, the Los Angeles Sparks were the team with the claim and she was able to find a new home just in time to play in their game against the New York Liberty. The moves this week are now accounted for in Golden State’s salary cap situation too.

Julie Vanloo and the Sparks

Los Angeles created a roster spot yesterday when they waived Odyssey Sims so it was no surprise that they quickly filled that spot with another guard given the makeup of their roster. Julie Vanloo is reunited with the other starting guard in Belgium’s backcourt, Julie Allemand, after they had another successful national team tournament while squaring off as opponents in the WNBA and their club careers in the past.

Vanloo certainly would have made some impression on the Sparks after hitting four three-pointers against them for the Valkyries in the season opener and she had four and five three-pointer games against them for the Washington Mystics last year too. While the team has a number of players who have scoring ability, this was a good opportunity for them to try adding another playmaker to the mix as they have not started the season as well as they had hoped.

Other Players Waived

Chloe Bibby and Bree Hall were both waived on Monday before Julie Vanloo was waived so the lack of news about them being claimed means that no team stepped up to take on their contracts. They are now both free agents and can sign with any team. Hall will be hoping that a team has a hardship need or wants to take a chance on a younger player to plan for the future. Bibby will now be able to join Australia’s national team in the upcoming Asia Cup tournament in China next weekend.

Salary Cap Situation

Now that the waiver situations have all been resolved, the salary cap for the Valkyries can be updated. Since Los Angeles claimed Julie Vanloo, her entire contract gets removed from Golden State’s salary cap calculation, even the amount that she was paid. Chloe Bibby and Bree Hall will count on the salary cap for the rest of the season in the amount of base salary that they were paid during their days with the team. The same is true for the base salaries paid to Kyara Linskens and Aerial Powers. The Valkyries still have plenty of salary cap room for the season, giving them the flexibility to make additional moves as they see fit.
