Where are the Valkyries? EuroBasket Day 5 Edition

Sunday was the last day of the group stage as the remaining teams would advance to the quarterfinals and travel to Greece were decided.

Belgium

Belgium had already advanced along with their next opponent Czechia, but the teams were playing for the top spot in the group and bracket placement. The game was close in the first half, but Belgium was able to maintain a lead on the hosts in the second half and get the 72-60 win. Julie Vanloo had 7 points in 32 minutes while Kyara Linskens had 15 points and 6 rebounds in 26 minutes.

Great Britain

The first game of the day would have an impact on whether Great Britain would already be eliminated when they faced Germany to close the day. Sweden nearly pulled off the upset that would have slammed the door on Great Britain, but they lost in their quest to improve their chances of prevailing in a tiebreaker. That meant that Great Britain could advance with a big win over Germany to flip the tiebreakers to their favor.

Germany quickly grabbed the lead in the game and got the 80-67 win. Temi Fagbenle had 11 points and 6 rebounds in 33 minutes to end her tournament. She will now head back the Valkyries and report in the next 48 hours, which would force the team to make a corresponding move to reduce the size of the roster. Also heading back to the Bay Area are Hannah Jump, who had 2 points in 13 minutes, and Kirsty Brown, who played 5 minutes.
