The Women’s Premier Basketball Association played in the semifinals on Saturday, trying to advance to the championship game and the chance to be crowned club champions of the entire Americas. The opponent for this game was a local team as Colegio Los Leones De Quilpue won both of their games in group play to get a bye to this round.
The Bay Area Phoenix kept the same starting lineup and took the lead early, controlling the first half. The opposition started chipping away in the third quarter and quickly tied the score in the fourth quarter. They briefly took the lead, but the Phoenix were able to tie it back and take the lead again. It ended up being a defensive battle, but they got the stops that they needed and scored enough to win 79-72. Rosemarie Julien had some key baskets for the team while Alaiyah San Juan had a great shooting day to tie for the scoring lead. Kharyssa Richardson gave them key minutes in the post off of the bench.
The win sets up a championship rematch on Sunday at 4pm PT against Sportiva Italiana, which is still undefeated and already decisively got the win in group play. They have the advantage of more rest over the course of the tournament with this game making it five in five days for the Phoenix, but it was not as easy for them in their first rematch with Araraquara today. The Phoenix have now reached the final for the second straight time, but will be looking to get one step further than two years ago.
