It was WNBA All Star Weekend in Chicago and there was Golden State Valkyries representation in the events on both days. Gabby Williams had been announced as a starter in Saturday’s game after the voting process for that was completed. Janelle Salaun was announced as one of the participants in Friday’s three-point contest earlier this week.
Janelle Salaun
It was a natural invite for Janelle Salaun to be one of the six players included in the three-point contest as she hit the break tied for fifth in the league in makes beyond the arc. She was the fourth shooter in the competition and needed at least 24 points to advance to the final. She ended up with 19 points in total to finish in fourth place overall.
Gabby Williams
After all of the All Stars were selected, there was a draft last Wednesday to determine which players would be on which teams. Instead of having the two players who were at the top of voting pick teams, two league legends, Teresa Weatherspoon and Cynthia Cooper, were named the GMs of the two teams. They picked between all of the starters first before choosing from among the reserves. Gabby Williams ended up being the last pick among the starters, ending up on Cynthia Cooper’s team.
As usual, the game was not exactly played at the highest intensity level. Team Spoon took the lead by halftime and it held up in the second half for the 129-122 victory. Williams played 23 minutes for Team Coop, scoring 18 points after mostly launching shots from beyond the arc, also grabbing 5 rebounds and handing out 6 assists during that time.
